Gagik Beglaryan: Negotiations underway with the Georgian side to ensure alternative route for Lars
We are working with the Georgian authorities as well as with colleagues from Russia. The Russian side helped our citizens to reach Yerevan, Gagik Beglaryan, Armenia’s Minister of Transport and Communications told reports reflecting on the situation in Lars checkpoint and eliminating the consequences of the road closure after the flood.
“I had contacts with the Georgians and know works are underway. The river which totally overflowed its bank, now is being brought to its usual course, and works are completed by 50 percent,” Beglaryan informed, adding the works of removing the rock fragments from the highway will start soon.
“According to data provided by them, Lars highway will be fully restored in 10-15 days,” said the minister.
“I am confident an agreement is about to be reached between Russian and Georgian authorities to ensure alternative route to Lars,” Beglaryan said, pointing out to the possibility of using a highway passing through South Ossetia.
To remind, on June 23 a section of the road close to Lars checkpoint with Russia in the northern part of Georgia was damaged after Tergi River overflowed its banks. Due to the flood the Georgian authorities closed traffic on the road, resulting in dozens of Armenian citizens stuck in the area.
