State interference is imperative for integration of persons with disabilities in job market, psychologist says
“The psychological integration of persons with disabilities in the society should begin with replacing the term ‘disabilities’,” psychologist Arkadi Mehrabyan said during a press conference.
According to him, it implies a certain label and could be replaced with the phrase - ‘people with special needs’.
Concerning general integration, the psychologist said that attention should be paid on certain areas, like daily communication (for everyday life) and social communication (for work).
“The [integration in the] job market is probably the most dreadful [part]. If it was possible to achieve success in everyday life integration by working with private organizations, in this area the intervention of the state is imperative,” Arkadi Mehrabyan noted.
The psychologist underlined the involvement of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Armenia noting that the ministry has been carrying out serious work.
Concerning mobility issues of persons with disabilities in educational institutions, Mr. Mehrabyan noted the controversial nature of the issue, and stated that the educational system is caught between two fires in this regard. “There’s a decision on inclusive education, yet children with disabilities need special treatment. In this regard, we don’t have enough specialists. This creates obstacles leading to incomplete development. That’s why there are students with diplomas but no knowledge”.
Concerning the society, Mr. Mehrabyan said that there still exist the stereotype of inferiority towards persons with disabilities.
