First of all, the people of Nagorno Karabakh should decide their status, whether they want to be an independent state or join the Republic of Armenia, President Serzh Sargsyan told in an interview with Al Mayadeen Arabic television channel.

“The most important thing for me is to see the security of the people of Nagorno Karabakh ensured, for them having the opportunity to live in their historical fatherland. That security may be provided only outside of Azerbaijan, and no one may have doubts about that now,” stressed President Sargsyan.

To his words, no Armenian will remain in Karabakh, if assume Karabakh be included within Azerbaijan for a day.

“Thus, the vital thing for the Nagorno Karabakh is to be outside of Azerbaijan. We favor the idea for the Nagorno Karabakh people to decide their status, as it happens throughout the world,” said President Sargsyan.

President stressed that if the right for self-determination were not respected and viewed as a fundamental right, the UN would have 60-70 member states.

“The Azerbaijani leadership should realize, it may in no way not keep those people under Azerbaijani rule,” Sargsyan noted.

To remind the interview was recorded in late June in Yerevan and hosted by Ghassan bin Jiddo, the head of the board of directors of Al Mayadeen TV channel. The interview was published on YouTube page of the channel on July 11.

During the interview President Sargsyan reflected on the agenda issues of Armenia’s domestic and foreign policy, existing challenges, Armenian’s participation in different integration processes, its relations with regional and Arab states, the process of international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, background of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, recent development over the settlement process, mediators’ efforts, Armenia’s stance on the Syrian crisis, refugee problem and other issues.
