Presentation of exclusive Otri Trio ensemble in Armenia
Over the years the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia and its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Sergey Smbatyan have been promoting the creation of exclusive ensembles in the framework of the orchestra.
July 13 became the birthday of the new and unique Otri Trio ensemble the presentation of which was held at the Cafesjian Centre for the Arts.
According to the public relations department of the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia, the trio is comprised of the laureates of various international and national competitions, current musicians of the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia Anzhela Hovhannisyan (violin), Arevik Kosyan (viola) and Ruzanna Tovmasyan (flute). The combination of the instruments of this ensemble is exclusive in Armenia.
The musicians note that unlike classical piano trios, they present the alternative version of the classical trio, which consists of woodwind and string instruments. The newborn ensemble provides an absolutely beautiful and rich sound that comes from the unusual mixture of instruments.
By the way, the name “otri” has Latvian origin and is translated as an alternative. So, the Otri Trio suggests the alternative version of the classical trio. The members of the ensemble said that the “copyright” of such naming belongs to Maestro Sergey Smbatyan.
Plenty of musical pieces have been written for this type of ensemble, nevertheless the musicians have expressed a desire to cooperate with Armenian composers to enlarge their repertoire.
The program of the concert included Ludwig van Beethoven’s Serenade for flute, violin and viola in D major, Max Reger’s Serenade for flute, violin and viola and Nino Rota’s Trio for flute, violin and piano. In fact, the last two compositions were Armenian premiers. Anushik Karapetyan (piano) also took part in the concert.
