Expert in Turkey: External forces likely behind the military coup attempt in Turkey
The attempt by the military to stage a coup in Turkey was a surprise, turkologist Levon Hovsepyan told Panrama.am. “Though we observed certain prerequisites which didn’t ruled out such developments,” he said.
To his words, though the military coup attempt failed, major developments are ahead.
“This appears to me a serious challenge for president Erdogan. Despite the overall loyalty of the army command to the president, certain groups within the Turkish army were revealed ready to question Erdogan’s legacy.”
The coup was suppressed not only due to the loyalty of the army to the president, but also to the fact, military coup participant were not backed by political and civil representatives, lacked wide opportunities and leverages. Apart from that, thousands of people went out to streets reacting Erdogan’s call.
While Turkish leadership accuses US-based cleric Fethullah Gülen to be behind Friday night’s attempted coup, the expert does not rule out external forces may stand behind.
“If Erdogan manages to overcome this, he will register another victory to consolidate his power, and increase his clout within the state. Euphoria is expected to dominate in the state for quite a long period of time, since Erdogan supporters will stay in the streets,” noted Hovesepyan.
Asked, what possible affect the attempted coup may have on Turkish Economy, Hovsepyan noted:” Turkish Lira has started falling, the economy will undoubtedly suffer. The events will negatively affect the country’s economic attractiveness. Because of the expected deep processes in Turkey, different intestate and regional projects may suffer”.
