No connection between latest events in Turkey and Armenia, expert says
“I don’t see any connection between the latest events in Turkey and Armenia,” said expert on international studies, Armenak Minasyants.
According to the expert, in case of Armenia, considering the complexity of the situation, objectivity and restraint should be maintained.
Armenak Minasyants said that events and developments took a different course in Turkey. “Those who occupied the Police HQ in Armenia stated that they’ve organized a rebellion not a coup. The situation in Turkey is still very tense, they’ve declared a state of emergency, more than 6000 people have been detained. A great human hunt is underway in Turkey”.
According to him, Erdogan will maintain his power in Turkey. The Western world extremely needs Turkey. “The recent developments have badly affected the country’s economy. This situation creates an atmosphere of fear in Turkey, which is troubling for us too. We need to understand what country we’re dealing with in regional terms”.
Concerning the terrorist attack in Nice, Minasyants noted that the case should be considered in the context of the fight against radical Islamists. “The Islamist sentiments are rooted in France. Yet I think the fight against the radical Islamists isn’t well organized there. In many cases, the French authorities and French people adjust to the demands of these groups. The fight against Islamist structures should be organized differently”.
Speaking about the Artsakh conflict negotiations process, the expert noted that the co-chairs are trying to create circumstances to realize whose way the negotiations are going to proceed. “A meeting was organized in Vienna on [John] Kerry’s initiative. Another was organized in St. Petersburg with the mediation of [Vladimir] Putin. Now it seems it’s the turn of France. Indeed, we can say that the co-chairs are working and organizing meetings each month, yet this is rather simple in reality. There’s an ongoing competition between them not to lose the initiative”.
