Restoration of Gumburdo village church underway
It’s been more than two weeks that the restoration works of Surb Hambardzum Church (Holy Ascension) at Gumburdo village have begun. During the works, human remains have been discovered, Javakhk News reports.
The church of Gumburdo, Akhalkalaki region was built in 10th century. Currently it is in a dilapidated condition.
Land clearance works, as well as classification of stones and khachkars (cross-stones) have commenced since July 5.
Archaeologist Besik Kolbayan said that after arranging the stones, excavations will be carried out. The restoration works will begin soon after the excavations.
The restoration of the church is carried out on the initiative of the Cultural Heritage Protection Agency of
Georgia. The 10th-century church will be completely restored in 3 years.
Last year, during excavations by the Cultural Heritage Protection Agency of Georgia, human bones have been found.
The Gumburdo church is among controversial Armenian churches in Georgia.
