Excavations in Tigranakert resume
Tigranaket, Artsakh excavations financed by the NKR Government have launched since July 1, head of the expedition, Hamlet Petrosyan told Panorama.am.
“I’ve had a meeting with the Prime Minister of Artsakh, who provided the financial support,” he said.
According to Petrosyan, they are currently working on the two lines of walls of the fortified district. “Here we can observe a curious thing. There are not only walls, but also adjacent platforms with complex structure”.
The head of the expedition also said that they are carrying out excavations in the early-Christian square, particularly on the western side of the first basilica.
Hamlet Petrosyan also noted that excavations will last until August 10 due to the small funding.
“Tigranakert is a huge monument, and it’s unfortunate that we’re only able to discover it at such a slow pace,” he said.
To remind, the expedition of National Academy of Sciences of Armenia and Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography discovered Tigranakert city founded by the Armenian King Tigran II the Great (95-55 BC) in 2005 in Artsakh.
