Ara Papian: Kazan document compulsion would ultimately blow up domestic situation
“A long-term strategic alliance between Turkey and Russia cannot be formed, yet [a cooperation] of a few years is quite possible. However it will have a bad impact on Armenia,” Head of Modus Vivendi Centre, political scientist Ara Papian said during a press conference.
The letter suggested the experience of the ‘20s to ground his views. “Unfortunately, those few years are enough for us to have great losses. We can remember from the ‘20s when the relations between Bolshvik Russia and Kemalist Turkey softened and they became brother countries, and Armenia suffered tremendous losses. Therefore, we’re now in a rather difficult situation”.
According to the political scientist, the policy of Armenian authorities of relying on Russia turned out to be wrong. He noted that finding alternatives is the only way out of this situation.
“If you have no alternatives, you don’t have any significance in politics. Both in political and economic terms I mean China and the West. It’s hard to tell to what extent we’ll manage [to cooperate with them],” the political scientist said.
For example, for developing and strengthening the relationship with the West, human rights should be protected in the country, while, according to Papian, the latest events showed that human rights aren’t protected in Armenia.
“Hundreds of people are being illegally detained and arrested. In other words, we’re living in the hardest periods of time of our statehood, when we have the most serious domestic and foreign problems,” Ara Papian added.
Referring to Putin-Sargsyan meeting, which is to be held today, Papian said that he doesn’t have “special expectations”, as Armenia “is in rather weak position”.
“If only we could avoid the compulsion of the Kazan document... the compulsion of this document would ultimately blow up the domestic situation. In case of its circulation, those demonstrations, we’ve faced, will seem childish games compared to those that would await us. Concessions made in accordance to that document will lead to the loss of Artsakh,” Ara Papian added.
