Mural “In the mountains” to be renovated by U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation
Renovation works of the mural “In the Mountains” by Hakob Hakobyan currently kept in a canteen of an abandoned factory have not yet started.
In April, Armenian Ministry of Culture declared that measures had been undertaken with the support of the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) to move the mural to a more proper site for the tourists as well as implement the restoration works.
It is yet unknown at what phase the comprehensive study for assessing the state of mural is, however that is evident the restoration works will most probably be postponed due to upcoming rains and the cold weather.
The time passes, while the poor condition of a non-functioning canteen and drastic fluctuation of the temperature will consistently have a negative affect on the mural.
Internet users are actively debating over the fate of the art work, while the Ministry of Culture requires written enquiries: ”We kindly ask to submit written enquiries in order for us to contact responsible bodies and issue concrete responses,” the statement of the ministry read.
Thus below are the questions for the consideration of the Ministry of Culture:
- What studies have been carried out and what information about the renovation works of the mural is obtained?
- Have you received funds from the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation for implementing restoration works?
- How long will renovation works last?
- Who will be in charge of those works?
- In case the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation does not finance the renovation, are any extra-budgetary funds available to save the mural?
