The film about Armenia’s earthquake selected for submission to Oscar
Members of the National Film Academy of Armenia voted for Sarik Andreasyan’s “Earthquake” as Armenia’s submission to Oscar in the “Best Foreign Language Film”.
To remind earlier, the National Film Academy of Armenia received three applications for submission to the 89th Academy Award. The movies submitted were Jivan Avetisyan’s “The Last Inhabitant”, Davit Safarian’s “Warm country, cold winter”, and Sarik Andreasyan’s “Earthquake”.
The voting was held in two rounds, in which “Earthquake” received the most votes by a simple majority. 24 out of the 26 members were present at the secret voting.
“We should choose one film to be part of some processes,” Harutyun Khachatryan, head of the National Film Academy, told.
Sarik Andreasyan’s “Earthquake” tells about the devastating Spitak earthquake of December 7th, 1988. The story is set in Leninakan. Konstantin Berezhnoy, a 50-year-old Russian, and Robert Melkonyan, a 28-year-old Armenian, work together to rescue the desperate survivors. Screenwriters are Sergey Yudakov, Aleksey Gravitskiy and Arsen Danielyan. The cast includes Konstantin Lavronenko, Mariya Mironova, Artyom Bystrov, Hrant Tokhatyan, Irina Bezrukova, Michael Poghosian, Sos Janibekyan and others.
