Children and women are the ones who pay the highest price during the war, Ghaida Odat says
“I am deeply convinced that in any state every conflict requires a peaceful settlement,” Ghaida Odat, Chairwoman of the Syrian Women’s Committee told reporters today in Yerevan.
Ghaida Odat is participating in conference of the Young Women’s Peace Award in the Caucasus, which acknowledges the exceptional role and leadership potential of young women in building peace, empowering their communities and working to prevent conflicts.
Mrs. Odat reflected on her political activity, adding she has resided out of Syria for more than two years.
“I was participating in political processes in my state as well. Much depends on the society, since often women’s role is downgraded in such activities. That is why the UN agencies encouragement should come to support women’s rights activists”.
To her words, children and women are the ones who pay the highest price during the war, even if the war is run for the sake of a just cause.
“In Syria everything started peacefully to withdraw the 40-year long dictatorship. The real catastrophe started once the weapons were taken and other power resources were mobilized. Our struggle is about the democracy to win, yet that should come in a peaceful way,” the Syrian woman added.
To note, Ghaida Odat (Syria), Kheda Omarkhadieva (Chechnya), and Eliko Bendeliani (Georgia) won the award.
