Richard Giragosian: Women are the agents of revolutions and reforms in society
Women are very well aware of the value of peace, because they’re the ones paying the highest price for it, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Armenia, Judith Farnworth said during “Women in Caucasus for peace and stability: peace begins in your home” conference held today, September 8 in Armenia.
It should be noted that the conference was organized on the initiative of “Democracy Today” NGO. The subject of the conference varies each year depending on the world’s current critical problems. The regional conference aims at creating a platform for women in Caucasus, involved in protection of peace and human rights.
Ambassador Farnworth noted that it is important to consider women's efforts for establishing peace. However, the ambassador thinks that their participation in the political life is insufficient. She added that necessary conditions should be created for women to have equal opportunities to work and speak.
Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Filaret Berikyan who was also present at the event noted that such conferences should be organized all over the world. “Being a small region, Caucasus is in a rather tense situation. In order to ensure security in the region, new and appropriate approach is necessary. We must do everything so that such conferences turn into a worldwide peace movement.”
Director of Regional Studies Center, political analyst Richard Giragosian said that women are needed in various fields starting with politics. “It is not enough to stand aside and criticize, [they] should be involved in everything. Women are the agents of revolutions and reforms in the society. Now I look at Armenia with the eyes of my 6-year-old daughter. What kind of Armenia are we going to leave to the next generation? There is a need for real change in Armenia and it has to come from within. Our future is in our hands.”
