Bones of Armenian kings found during excavations in Aghtsk
Excavations in Aghtsk village of Aragatsotn province have stared since 2015, deputy director of the Scientific-Research Center of Historic-Cultural Heritage, archaeologist Hakob Simonyan said during a press conference adding that interesting findings have been made there.
“Under the paving in front of the altar of the church, 3 stone boxes containing relics were found. A cross was preserved on one of them. When opening two of them we found human remains. It is clear that they were specifically designed for people of higher statuses. It is likely that those are the bones of the Armenian kings,” the archaeologist said.
Hakob Simonyan also said that King Shapur II couldn’t quell the spirit of Armenia and following the advice of his sorcerers invaded on Armenia taking away the bones of the kings, except for Sanatruk’s.
“According to Buzand (Faustus of Byzantium), the Armenian cavalry, defeated them and took the bones. A special mausoleum was built in Aghtsk for burial. Unfortunately, none of the bones were preserved in these cells. It seemed that the remains of the Armenian kings have been lost forever in the turmoil of time,” the archaeologist added.
