The US Embassy grants $450 thousand for reconstructions works of Meghri St. Sargis Church
U.S. Ambassador to Armenian Richard Mills and Armenian acting Minister of Culture signed a memorandum on provision grant funds for the preservation and renovation works of Meghri St. Sargis basilica church. The project will be implemented within the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation program (AFCP).
To note, the U.S. State Department each year provides financing for a number of projects around the globe that protect unique cultural heritage sites.
St. Sargis Church, built in the 17th century, is situated in Meghri town of Armenia’s Syunik region and is made of rough stones decorated with unique murals.
Ambassador Richard Mills stated in his speech that the project is the tenth grant designed for the preservation of the values, which are as considered shared cultural heritage. To his words, the project aims to preserve such sites and showcase Armenia as a tourist destination
Armenian acting Minister of Culture Hasmik Poghosyan highlighted the project value, saying the church preservation and reconstruction is valued not only from the cultural but architectural perspectives, but is important in terms of the urban construction.
Minister Poghosyan next informed that along with Saint Sargis Church reconstruction works, renovation works of the mural “In the mountains” and works to safeguard significant archeological finds in the Areni Cave are underway, all of them financed by the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation program.
