Armenia is entering a “day of silence” ahead of local self-government elections
Local self-government elections are slated to be held on September 18 in 317 communities of Armenia’s Aragatsotn, Ararat, Armavir, Syunik, and Tavush regions.
Twenty four hours before the voting day a ban takes effect on any electioneering, events and rallies by political parties, distribution of handouts and political advertising on the TV and radio.
A total number of 408 candidates for the heads of community and 2 693 candidates will run for the Council of Elders elections. 10 out of 408 nominated candidates for the heads of communities are women.
In 125 out of 237 communities only one candidate is nominated for the head of community, two candidates in 72, three candidates - in 26, four candidates in 14 communities, five in two and seven candidates in one community are to take part in the elections.
A delegation of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe is the only registered international mission registered by Armenia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) to monitor the by-elections.
On the Election Day, seven Congress’ teams will be deployed to different areas in which by-elections are going to be organized.
The electoral campaign of the candidates lasted from August 31 to September 16.
