Hollande urges Calais authorities to dismantle 'Jungle' migrant camp
French President, Francois Hollande called on the authorities of the French city of Calais to shut down the ‘Jungle’ refugee camp hosting thousands of people, Elysee Palace said Saturday, Sputnik International reports.
“The most urgent task of the government is to remove the camp in Calais and provide shelter for refugees,” Hollande was quoted as saying.
According to the source, the president called the conditions in the camp “unacceptable” for living. He suggested relocating refugees from the ‘Jungle’ to other reception centers across the country.
Hollande is expected to visit Calais on Monday.
The number of people living in the ‘Jungle’ camp are estimated to reach as many as 9,000. The camp is seen as a gateway to the United Kingdom by thousands of undocumented migrants.
