Great indifference towards the cross stones of Jugha cemetery
“The Republic of Armenia shows a great indifference towards the cross stones of Jugha cemetery,” expert on Nakhijevan, Honoured Worker of Culture, Argam Aivazian said during a press conference today, September 28.
According to him, to date, Armenia has failed to hold Azerbaijan responsible for destroying them. “I have repeatedly said that all the Armenian material heritage, including monasteries, churches, cemeteries and cross stones have been destroyed in Nakhijevan in 1998-2006.”
Aivazian said that in the history of the Armenians, this was a phenomenon of a large-scale destruction from the point of view of history and cultural values.
“I have repeatedly requested the RA Government, state agencies concerning making about 15 thousand negatives, drawings, slides on the cross stones of Jugha cemetery at my possession a state property. The problem hasn’t been solved yet. With archaeologist Hamlet Petrosyan and Australian experts, we are trying to recover the cross stones of Jugha cemetery. The initial phase of the project has been successfully carried out. Hopefully, we’ll be able to complete the project in the next few years.”
He added that the Australian company is taking care of the financial issues of the project. “The sad thing is that this will become a property of Australia. However, [the materials] will be displayed at the Armenian Genocide Museum Institute after restoration.”
