Sculptor Nune Tumanyan's accidental discovery and “personal investigation”
A year ago, sculptor Nune Tumanyan's casually discovered a sculpture similar to her “Serenity” (2005) on Facebook. A girl published the photo of her leaning against the sculpture.
“The similarity struck me. And since I avoid plagiarism, I decided to find out the story of the photo. Reading the comments under the picture, it became clear that the girl in the photo is the sculptor herself (Iranian sculptor Zahra Rasouli, who made the sculpture in 2013),” Nune Tumanyan told Panorama.am.
According to her, they have a negative attitude concerning such phenomena in Iran.
“There’s even a specialist on Facebook criticizing plagiarized works. When this was put to discussion, sculpture Zahra Rasuli admitted her guilt and said she was going to mention that I am the artist who created the sculpture,” Tumanyan said.
Publishing your works on the Internet puts them under the risk of theft. However, keeping them hidden is pointless. “The creative process is very personal and magical, but I want to show the finished works as soon as possible, to make the audience a part of my feelings.”
“Serenity” is a small sculpture.
“One day I may decide to increase its size. In that case, my work would be viewed as plagiarized. This made me undertake a “personal investigation”,” Nune Tumanyan said.
