New wave of tension is possible in Syria, expert says
"Military operations in Syria have entered a very sharp and aggressive stage," an Arabist and a researcher from the YSU Center for Civilization and Cultural Studies, Hayk Kocharyan said today, September 3 during a press conference.
"The bombings of the Syrian government forces in Der Zor carried out by the coalition forces were estimated by the first as an act of overt aggression toward themselves. That led to mutual blaming making impossible to maintain the ceasefire," the expert said.
According to Kocharyan, the political process aimed at establishing the ceasefire inspired hope. However, it didn’t end in success.
''The tension is evident in the eastern districts of Aleppo, where government forces are trying to regain control. The U.S. is busy with its internal affairs, thus the other forces are taking the advantage trying to consolidate their positions in Syria. From that perspective, the situation is favorable for President Bashar al-Assad," the expert said.
According to the researcher of the Center for Civilization and Cultural Studies, Russia tries to take advantage of the situation to strengthen its position in the region. So a new wave of tension in Syria is likely to occur by the end of the year.
