Gevog Gevorgyan: Today Armenian movies are not commercial
“Today fewer people go to cinema especially to watch Armenian films,” Director of the National Cinema Center of Armenia Gevorg Gevorgyan told to the reporter of Panorama.am.
In his words previously when ques could be observed ahead of the screenings of more simple, entertainment films, nowadays even such films are not watched much.
Gevorg Gevorgyan claimed that unfortunately Armenian cinema is not commercial currently.
“The first factor of making commercial films is increasing their technical and artistic quality. No matter what the topic of a film is, the first indicator is its quality. Today it is believed that entertaining films with light plots are more commercial in Armenia. The quality and plot of those films are not in compliance with the ones produced by our cinema center and cannot be submitted to international film festivals. We have many quality films that have won awards in different festivals but few people go to watch them in Armenian cinemas.
On one hand we claim that the most important feature is the film quality but on the other hand we can see that many quality films are out of cinema market. In order to make quality films commercial the filmmakers need to use such elements that can attract today’s audience. It is not an easy thing. But we must try to make films commercial as we cannot always apply to the state to receive funds for making a film,” Gevorg Gevorgyan added.
