Turkologist: Turkey becoming less reliable partner to NATO
Turkey grew tired of the western tyranny and is drifting toward the East to run a more convenient policy, turkologist Mushegh Khudaverdyan told a press conference on Saturday.
In the expert’s words, in the aftermath of the failed coup major changes took place in Turkey’s internal and external domains.
“We can state that Turkey-EU relations have significantly deteriorated. Turkey tries to run an independent policy, in most cases ignoring the western, specifically the US interests. Turkey is gradually becoming less reliable partner to NATO,” Khudaverdyan said.
As to the domestic developments within the country, the speaker pointed out to number of changes conditioned by the weakening of the western axis and ongoing arrests of the members of the so-called Gulen movement.
“Erdogan’s warning of the possibility for another attempt of power change speaks of the fear among the Turkish ruling elite, that they may be stripped of the office and power levers at any point. The fear dominates in the Turkish power structure and personally for Erdogan, generating deep distrust toward different politicians, resulting in constant arrests,” the expert analyzed.
Khudaverdyan next predicted the arrests would be continuous amid the lack of prospects for Turkey to break the stalemate.
