78 thousand people with diabetes registered in Armenia
The number of people with diabetes has doubled and the number of deaths due to diabetes tripled over the recent years, according to the ten-year research carried out by Information-Analytical center of Armenia’s Ministry of Healthcare. Tsaghik Vardanyan, the Head of the Department of health care policy told a press conference on Monday, saying some 78 people with diabetes are registered in Armenia.
“In 2015, 7,800 cases of newly-registered cases of diabetes were recorded. The 2016 are not yet finalized. The Ministry of Healthcare works out new methods, directions and strategic programs aimed at controlling the situation at least. Among those initiatives are the screenings implemented through out-patient and polyclinics services, financed by the World Bank. In the scope of the initiative 303 thousand people have undergone medical examination with blood glucose levels increase occurred at about 7,4 percent of the examined people,” Tsaghik Vardanyan informed.
She next spoke of the people with diabetes who are provided with medications under the state procurement
“100 percent of the patients are provided with insulin, while only 80 percent of those depending on medication are supplied with those. At this point we are working toward covering the needs of all the registered patients,” Mrs. Vardanyan said.
To note, World Diabetes Day is the primary global awareness campaign of the diabetes world and is held on November 14 of each year.
It was introduced in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to the alarming rise of diabetes around the world.
World Diabetes Day is a campaign that features a new theme chosen by the International Diabetes Federation each year to address issues facing the global diabetes community. While the campaigns last the whole year, the day itself marks the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea which led to the discovery of insulin in 1922.
Each year, World Diabetes Day is centered on a theme related to diabetes. Topics covered have included diabetes and human rights, diabetes and lifestyle, diabetes and obesity, diabetes in the disadvantaged and the vulnerable, diabetes in children and adolescents. People with diabetes get to take a day off work or school on this day and talking about diabetes.
World Diabetes Day is celebrated worldwide by the over 230 member associations of the International Diabetes Federation in more than 160 countries and territories, all Member States of the United Nations, as well as by other associations and organizations, companies, healthcare professionals and people living with diabetes and their families.
