Concert ahead of 120th anniversary of composer Haro Stepanian
Today this year's last recital by pianist Hayk Melikyan will be held in the Concert Hall of Komitas Museum-Institute. The concert features the premiere of the piano preludes of the prominent but forgotten Armenian composer Haro Stepanian.
Ahead of the composer's 120th anniversary the concert will launch one of the most important initiatives authored by Haro Stepanian: the initiative of the interaction with the Armenian audience. Moreover, in 2017 Hayk Melkonyan has planned to record the composer's piano preludes and to release a CD dick which will be followed by CD presentation and staging of the opera "David of Sasun" created by the composer. Sarina Avtandilyan has come up with the initiative.
During the recital the pianist will also perform several masterpieces from the compositions of the contemporary and the 20th century composers, including Stockhausen, Harvey, Vasks, Murray and Kolomiets.
Haro Stepanian was born in 1897 in Elizabethpole. From 1923 until 1926 he studied in the music college after the Gnesins in Moscow, the class of compositions after M. Gnesin. In 1930 he graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory, the class of compositions after V. Scherbachev. From 1930 to 1934 he lectured in the Yerevan Conservatory. Since 1934 he was an assistant professor. From 1937 to 1948 - the chairman of the organizational Committee of the Armenian Composers’ Union.
