Inadequate work of relevant state bodies another reason for the rise of domestic violence – Discussion
The Women’s Right Center has received more reports about cases of physical violence against women this year as compared to the previous, phycologist Marine Yeghiazaryan informed, referring to the statistics of the calls received on the center’s helpline in Yerevan and Armenia’s seven regions.
The data was presented at a discussion on Friday looking into the cases of domestic violence in 2016 as well as the legislation against combating domestic violence currently under consideration.
According to the speaker, 48 percent of the reported women complained about physiological, 50 percent - of physical and 2 percent - of sexual violence against them.
“35 women were subject to domestic violence during 2010-2015,” Yeghiazaryan said.
Lida Minasyan, Executive Director at “Society Without Violence” NGO informed that 7 women was subject to domestic and gender-based violence during the year.
“Murder cases are the consequence of the societal indifference and the inadequate work of the relevant state bodies,” Mrs. Minasyan stressed, adding the women who were murdered had applied and reported when alive to the police about the violence, yet the police in most cases remained indifferent.
The moderator of the discussion informed that the RA Police was sent an invitation to participate in the discussion, yet no representative was present at the event.
Panorama.am requested information about the cases of domestic violence from the Police of Armenia. The response promised to provide data within 30 working days, since data compilation is underway.
To note, the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Women marks the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign from November 25 through December 10 aimed at galvanizing action to end violence against women and girls, raising public awareness and mobilizing people to bring about change.
