Samvel Martirosyan on the most popular social media platforms in Armenia
The internet penetration rate in Armenia has reached 70 percent with an anticipated 75-77 percent this year, Social Media and Information Security Analyst Samvel Martirosyan told reporters at a press conference, pointing out the boom of the internet access and usage in the country for 2010-2014.
To Martirosyan, increase of mobile subscribers and the internet usage on mobile devices is recorded in Armenia. “For example, 8 out the ten Facebook users prefer mobile devices, while the number was 4-5 in the previous year,” Martirosyan said.
The expert noted that social media continue dominating the Armenian internet with an observed redistribution of the audiences among those platforms. Over the last period Odnoklassniki is giving the ground, while Facebook users increase has somewhat slowed in the wake of emerging social platforms.
According to the data presented by the speaker, the number of Facebook monthly users has reached 1 million with a daily audience of 750 thousand. Much like Facebook, Odniklassniki has 1 million active monthly viewers with daily audience of 760 thousand.
Vkontakte is another popular social media platform among the Armenians which is mainly preferred for listening to music and watching films.
The audience of Instagram is rapidly growing with 250 thousand active monthly users in Armenia and a monthly growth of 15-20 percent popular among the younger users.
Twitter audience of Armenia is estimated 15-20 thousand viewers mostly popular among the young users.
The most used messenger in Armenia is Viber, followed by WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
As to email services, Samvel Martirosyan informed mail.ru still dominates among the Armenian users. If 3-4 years ago the email service was used by 80 percent, today yahoo and Gmail share is growing.
The expert informed that social media platforms in Armenia are used as information sources, while the verification of the report credibility is weak. As a result, disinformation often is put into circulation in the internet, Martirosyan concluded.
