Grigori Saghyan: New malware threats emerge every day
“Today we have ended up in a situation when 319.000 new malware threats emerge every day according to the data provided by Kaspersky laboratory,” Grigori Saghyan, Vice President of the Internet Society of Armenia NGO noted during the meeting with the reporters.
In his words, such viruses are not developed by some intelligent hackers. “There is an enormous database of tools. Every student can download it, generate the malware through a program and release it through the internet. There are different ways of releasing the viruses. The easiest way is the use of the social engineering, i.e. using the people’s weaknesses. One of the simplest examples is the computer virus emerged a few years ago. The malware was entitled “I love you”. People received a message with this title, opened it driven out of interest and it immediately infected the computer. Currently another malware named “This is your electricity bill, please pay it”. Once you click on the message, a file opens which infects the computer. New malware threats emerge each time.”
As for the state of cyber security in Armenia, Saghyan noted that a number of commissions have operated for more than one year, which take measures to strengthen the cyber security in Armenia.
“The international experience shows that either one body should deal with that issue, or several bodies should operate to ensure security in their own spheres. In Armenia it is advisable to establish cyber security structures decentralized in every sphere, the activities of which will naturally be coordinated by a primary computer,” he added.
He also noted that currently the most protected sphere in Armenia is the banking system as the banks apply appropriate security measures demanded by the CB.
The speaker made it clear that the Information security refers to overall security situation, and cyber security is a matter of ensuring confidentiality and security by technical means in the narrower cyber space.
To note, 30 November is the international day of protection of information. For the first time the day was marked by American Association of Computer Devices in 1988 to remind people of the necessity of the protection of their computers and the information they contain.
