South Korean opposition parties push to impeach President Park
South Korean opposition parties have vowed to push ahead and try to impeach President Park Geun-hye, rejecting her offer to resign amid a growing influence-peddling scandal, ABC news reported.
To remind, Yesterday Ms. Park asked the parliament to decide how and when she should quit, a move opposition politicians dismissed as a ploy to buy time and avoid impeachment. Her offer came amid massive street rallies calling for her resignation over a huge political scandal involving her and a long-time confidante.
The leaders of the three opposition parties, which together hold 165 of the single-chamber parliament's 300 seats and can initiate an impeachment motion, said they would not negotiate with Ms. Park's party on her proposal to step down.
"The people of South Korea do not want to enter the new year with Park Geun-hye as President," Choo Mi-ae, leader of the main opposition Democratic Party, said at the start of the meeting, as quoted by the source.
