Two ruined Armenian churches in Diyarbakir to be renovated
The historical monuments that suffered severe damages during the armed clashes that took place in Sur district of Diyarbakir in 2015 will be reconstructed.
As Ermenihaber reports, the Directorate General of Foundations of Turkey has allocated over 40 million liras (12 million USD) for the reconstruction of 11 historical monuments located in Sur district.
The list of the monuments includes two Armenian Catholic and Protestant churches which especially suffered great damages as a result of last year’s clashes between the Turkish forces and the Kurdish rebels. During the clashes a homemade bomb was detonated resulting to the total destruction of the church’s bell tower, the front wall and priest room.
During the renovation the initial construction of the churches will be preserved. Some of the construction works have already launched and the entire reconstruction process is set to be completed in 2018-2019.
