Record number of journalists killed in 2016
Since the beginning of 2016 144 media workers have been killed in 31 countries. The data has been provided in the annual report of Press Emblem Campaign non-commercial organization.
The data shows that this is a record number of the death of media workers in the past ten years. The Middle East and North Africa head the most dangerous regions for the journalistic work with 44 killed.
Latin America and Asia came second with 28 journalists killed each, Europe with 13 killed, Africa 10, one journalist was killed in North America, according to the PEC annual report. In 2016 16 reporters were killed in Iran, 3 in Russia and 2 in Ukraine.
The overall number of the victims also include the 20 journalists who died as a result of the Columbia plane crash.
Notably pursuant to the 2015 report published by the organisation 135 media workers were killed in 33 countries of the world.
