Writers Union of Greece has held an event to mark the 120th anniversary of the translation of the Armenian poetry into Greek. The Armenian-Hellenic Research Center, the AGBU branch and “Ararat” Union have assisted in organizing the event

As the Armenia news network reports President of the union Kostas Karusos noted in his welcome speech that the organized meeting is the first one in its format to be organized in Greece. He expressed apologies for the fact that the Greek Writers’ Union has organized such an event 70 years later.

Vice President of the union Pavlus Natanel underscored that if the history unites the Armenians and Greeks, the cultural ties between the two nations deepen their relations.

Lecturer of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Hambik Marukyan has turned to the matter how the Greek population got acquainted with the first Greek translations of the Armenian poems during the Hamid massacres (the first translation_ “Freedom” by Miakel Nalbandyan, 1895). He added the event is the third one organised within the framework of the events commemorating the 120th anniversary of the Hamid massacres.

The source reminds that the Writers’ Union of Greece is the oldest and the most prominent union of the Greek writers.
