Vigen Chaldranyan: Cinema has to wait

Pan-Armenian (Hamazgayin) Theatre after Sos Sargsyan has a new creative director. Today Minister of Culture Armen Amiryan introduced newly appointed creative director of the theatre Vigen Chaldranyan to the theatre staff.

“Some approaches have changed according to which theatres should have creative directors. Theatre must have its own identity and features. This does not presuppose that the theatre is headed by one actor. Clear agreements have been reached with all the creative directors according to which they must cooperate with different directors,” A. Amiryan noted before introducing Vigen Chaldranyan.

In his words appointing artistic directors to the theatres is one of the most important programs of improving the Armenian theatre which will lead to some changes in the programs, as well as will restore the identity and characteristic feature of the theatres.

Vigen Chaldranyan opened up on his longtime dream, which is “establishing a house with harmonious atmosphere where the theatre staff can live as a happy family without any intrigues.”

In response to the question whether his activities in the cinema and theatre will not hinder each other he noted the following: “Soon the third book about me entitled “Cinema is my home, theatre is my identity” will be published. Every time I make a film I miss theatre, meanwhile I try to introduce the most important features of cinema to the theatre. Whatever cinema has the theatre lacks and vice versa.

I will be mistaken if I state that I have little experience in theatre. This year marks the 40 years of my creative work. Those years have been equally divided between theatre and cinema. I have always felt good in the theatre. Unfortunately cinema has to wait now, as I am going to launch a serious activity.”

Vigen Chaldranyan did not present the details on his future plans or his first performance.

“Firstly I need to undergo preparatory period for one month as this is a completely new stage in my life. I intend to prepare performances of the Armenian and foreign classic works, as well as musicals. We need to try to perform the works of prominent writers and playwrights on this stage. Works of various genres will be included in the play list,” the newly appointed creative director of the theatre added.

Speaking about the building of the theatre Minister of Culture said that the issue is under discussion currently and they already have some options. He added the decision will be taken in the coming future.
