Minister calls for protecting education sphere ahead of elections
Armenian Minister of Science and Education Levon Mkrtchyan called on political forces to protect the education sphere ahead of elections. The minister’s remarks came at the final press conference of the year. Minister Mkrtchyan admitted, however, that educated people serve as the basis for electoral processes.
“When the preliminary electronic voter registration is launched, people with relevant background will be demanded to implement the duty, including registering the citizens’ passports. Who is able to implement that duty in a village if not, for example, an Informatics teacher. The [electoral] system relies on the education especially in the regions,” the minister argued.
Minister Mkrtchyan went on pointing out the key principle that ideologies beyond political parties are drafted by educated people, and each educated individual should join a political party shoulder the one decide to get into politics.
“Any requirement about depoliticizing those people may lead to destruction of the political culture. Nevertheless, we should try to find the right balance to exclude educated people to make use of their service ‘weapons’ for pushing forward their own political ideology,” explained Levon Mkrtchyan.
