Vassily Ivanchuk is new World Champion in Rapid Chess
The World Rapid Championships in Doha, Qatar, had a dramatic finish. Before the last round five players shared the lead with 10 points out of maximum14. Three of these five players won in the last round: Magnus Carlsen, Alexander Grischuk and Vassily Ivanchuk. The tie-break had to decide - in this case, the Elo-average of the opponents. And here Ivanchuk was best and became World Rapid Champion 2016.
Norway’s World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen, who was also the holder of the World Rapid Champion title, finished third though he claimed four successive victories in the last round.
Armenian GM Levon Aronian suffered one defeat, claimed a victory and ended three games in draw. Although Aronian has been in the top three since the start of the tournament, the Armenian finished the competition with 9,5 points, being placed on the 9th spot.
Another representative of Armenia Hrant Melkumyan shared the 14-22 places with 9 points, while Vladimir Hakobyan took the 39th place with 8 points.
The note, 106 chess players participated in the Rapid Chess Championships. FIDE World Chess Blitz Championships is due to kick off today in Doha.
