Collection of National Gallery of Armenia in poor conditions
The collection of the National Gallery of Armenia currently features some 40.000 museum items a part of which are on permanent display in the 56 halls of the gallery and in its branches with some artifacts displayed temporarily. However there are some issues regarding the preservation of the museum items, Panorama.am reports.
During today’s press conference director of the National Gallery of Armenia Arman Tsaturyan noted the galley has always had issues regarding its heating and moisture and they continue to face those issues.
“The building of the gallery does not comply with the international standards at all. We have a boiler room which is operating all day long, however it is always cold in the building in winter and very hot in summer. The windows are old. Our heritage, wealth is kept in poor conditions. Urgent measures must be taken,” the director said adding that the government has initiated a program to construct a new building for the gallery.
In the words of A. Tsaturyan they wish to have a new building for the gallery, however taking into account the hard economic state of the country some measures aimed at preserving the items of the gallery must be taken if the government cannot afford constructing the new building.
The director of the gallery noted that the restoration department has 9 specialists who keep working hard all day long.
According to A. Tsaturyan no painting has destroyed as a result of the poor conditions, however there are artworks that cannot be displayed anymore due to the sustained damages.
