Different options for an alternative route to Lars under consideration, the minister says
Armenian Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technologies Vahan Martirosyan told journalists about the Armenian PM Karen Karapetyan’s instruction to hold discussions over working out alternative routes to Upper Lars checkpoint.
According to the minister, the relevant discussions are planned to be conducted with Georgian and Russian colleagues with proposals to be presented to the government by March 1.
Earlier, PM Karen Karapetyan stressed the importance of the Upper Lars checkpoint to trade turnover, adding that the problem of frequent landslides and snowdrifts caused by adverse climatic conditions needs to be addressed as they negatively affect the volume of freight.
Minister Vahan Martirosyan informed that discussions about alternative route to Lars are not limited to the possibility of using a highway passing through South Ossetia.
“We are looking into all options. with the one to be the most feasible negotiations. . Different directions are under discussion, including the construction of a railway, new road,” Minister Martirosyan noted, adding initial discussions had been held in Moscow yet with no final arrangement reached.
