Turkey is in search regarding its foreign policy, Karen Bekaryan says
“The recent developments in Turkey are quite active. In fact we witness significant changes in political processes and new scenario developments in the country,” Deputy of Armenia’s National Assembly, Chairman of the European Integration NGO Karen Bekaryan noted the aforesaid during today’s press conference, Panorama.am reports.
Speaking about Turkey-U.S. relations he firstly noted that Turkey’s President Erdogan has defined those relations as “not flawless” adding that “the relations with the NATO partners cannot be considered friendly.”
“Erdogan seeks to hold a meeting with U.S. President Trump as soon as possible and to discuss issues on the agenda. This means that he will attempt to settle certain issues through that meeting,” he noted.
K. Bekaryan also observes both local and global issues in the Turkey-EU relations. “One of the global issues is that regardless of all the talks and agreements they cannot settle the migration problem the way both of the sides expect,” he says.
In his words the amended draft Constitution of Turkey and the upcoming referendum are also among the issues the country has with the EU.
“Many politicians and countries see that draft as a retreat from democracy. The problem does not only refer to the thing that Turkey switches from the parliamentary system to the presidential one. The matter is the current president initiates constitutional amendments to expand his own powers. Thus the issue is not only related the system but rather to the trust towards Erdogan or the absence of that trust,” Chairman of the European Integration NGO noted.
Regarding the Russian-Turkey relations the speaker reminded that the two houses of the Russian Parliament (the State Duma) have ratified the Draft of Turkish Stream Agreement adding that this can be considered a progress as it shows expansion tendency in the field of cooperation.
In general Karen Bekaryan notes that Turkey is in active search in terms of its foreign policy.
“Being a close neighbour to the country we witness quite a significant instability and processes that can have numerous developments. This means that we should be consistent amid the possible expansion of the instability in our neighbourhood taking into account the absence of the Armenian-Turkish direct relations,” he concluded.
