Latvia building fence along a third of its border with Russia
Latvia is building a large-scale fence along its Russian border in an effort to keep out migrants who attempt to illegally cross the border, TASS agency reports, citing Latvia's Border Guard Service.
According to the source, the country decided to build a total of 90 kilometers worth of fencing along a third of its border with Russian. 17 million euros will be spent on its erection over the next four years. The height of the fence will be 2.7 meters, including barbed wire. It will be installed with video cameras and motion sensors.
According to media reports, some 300 migrants have entered Latvia illegally from Russia last year. Most of the migrants were from Vietnam, but also from Iraq and Syria. While project was planned long ago, but the Interior Ministry said it had become a priority amid the current migrant crisis in Europe.
