Azerbaijan leading the Karabakh conflict settlement to deadlock, political analyst says
Azerbaijan is leading the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement to deadlock, the Head of Hayatsk (Insight) Analytical Center Narek Minasyan told a press conference on Monday, adding instead of implementing the Vienna and St. Petersburg agreements [on strengthening the ceasefire agreements], Azerbaijan is intensifying ceasefire violation incidents.
“A meeting between Armenia and Azerbaijani FM is planned in Munich, though not confirmed yet. It is quite unrealistic to expect any advancement and political progress in the current reality,” noted the expert.
In Minasyan’s words, Armenia should make use of that meeting and deliver a clear message to Azerbaijan, the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs that Armenia will have nothing but to reconsider its position on a range of issues should Azerbaijan continue its non-constructive policy.
Asked what are the reasons for the intensification of the ceasefire violations cases over the recent period, the political analyst suggested Azerbaijan wishes to demonstrate its strength to own public and, alternatively, exert pressure on the Armenians. “With a couple of months remaining to April Azerbaijan is set to increase the pressure even further,” said the speaker.
Minasyan also expressed pessimism over the possibility of compromises in the light of ongoing developments.
“To speak of the readiness for mutual concessions of the Armenian, Artsakh and Azerbaijani societies is wrong until mechanisms of mutual trust are at place. Today we have no such mechanisms at all,” reasoned the expert.
