PM Karen Karapetyan not included in RPA proportional list due to law restriction
Spokesperson of the ruling Republic Party of Armenia (RPA), Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Eduard Sharmazanov says it has been due to personal decision of President Serzh Sargsyan not to head the RPA proportional list for the forthcoming parliamentary elections set on April 2.
“The matter has been discussed at the party executive board session, and the relevant decision was adopted,” Sharmazanov said at a briefing with reporters on Tuesday.
RPA spokesperson also commented on the reason Armenia’s PM Karen Karapetyan is not included in the RPA proportional list, citing Karapetyan’s explanation.
To note, Karen Karapetyan’s eligibility to participate in the parliamentary elections is restricted by Armenia’s election law, envisaging four-year permanent residence in the country to run for a parliamentary election.
Sharmazanov, however, reiterated the party position that Karen Karapetyan is set to head the cabinet after the elections should the Republican Party receive the majority to form a cabinet.
Sharmazanov next informed that RPA proportional list is rather competitive and includes intellectuals, political scientists as well as acting parliamentarians.
To note, the proportional list of the ruling party unveiled today is headed by RA Defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan, followed by Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan, Justice Minister Arpine Hovhannisyan, Ara Babloyan, and Minister of Culture Armen Amiryan.
