Education Minister: School Meals program needs serious investments
“We highly value the school meals program which targets the primary schools of all Armenia mainly for the first to four grades,” Armenian Minister of Education Levon Mkrtchyan told reporters at a briefing on Monday.
In the minister’s words, the program, however, needs serious investments since supplying hot meals to schoolchildren requires the creation of relevant infrastructure, the space for kitchen at all schools, to mention as an example.
As the Ministry earlier reported the total cost of the program since its inception has comprised USD 28 million.
To remind, School Meals program activities currently target communities in four regions: Ararat, Vayots Dzor, Tavush and Syunik financed by the government of Armenia, while in other regions the donor for the program is the government of the Russian Federation.
Around 83 thousand 1-4 graders are the beneficiaries of the program, which is supported by the Representation of the World Food Program in Armenia.
