“The intense love towards reading and writing that was observed in the Soviet period has reduced today, which is proved by the number of printed books and writers,” President of the Writers' Union of Armenia Edward Militonyan expressed such an opinion during today’s press conference ahead of the World Writers Day (March 3), Panorama.am reports.

“Today we have few young fiction authors. This must stand as an indicator for us that we fail to show proper attitude towards literature and writers. We must make sure that a writer’s book is demanded. Today there is a lack of literary meetings and discussions,” Militonyan expressed concerns.

He reminded that previously, during the Soviet years, literary meetings were organized in villages.

As one of the important issues, Militonyan singles out the translations of the works of the Armenian writers. “We must be able to distinguish the best works and create opportunities for them to be printed and translated,” he said.

As for the observation that the majority of the young Armenian authors prefer to present their works via the internet, he said: “I respect it, but in addition to the internet, we must not forget about the literary magazines and newspapers. I am more interested in the opinion of those readers who have high literary taste,” he said.

In the end, the president added that despite everything today wonderful writers live in Armenia.
