Armenia’s young wrestlers win three medals in Yakutsk tournament
International junior freestyle wrestling tournament in memory of the Olympic Champion Roman Dmitriev is over in Yakutsk, capital of the Sakha Republic. 165 strongest wrestlers from 14 countries took part in the tournament. 11 young Armenian wrestlers led by Avetik Vardanyan, head coach of the Armenian national youth freestyle wrestling team, represented Armenia in the championship.
As the Information Department of the Wrestling Federation of Armenia reports, in the two-day competition Armenian athletes managed to win 3 medals out of 32 in 8 weight classes. Hovhannes Mkhitaryan (w/c 84 kg) and heavyweight Hovhannes Maghakyan (w/c 120 kg) managed to overpower all their competitors in the initial bouts and made it to the final round.
In the decisive bouts, their rivals claimed victories. Mkhitaryan lost the bout to our compatriot representing Belarus Arkadi Poghosyan and Maghakyan was defeated by Naeim Hassanzadeh from Iran. Both Armenian wrestlers won the silver medals. Another Armenian wrestler Mher Markosyan (w/c 84 kg) won a bronze.
After Yakutsk tournament, on 6-8 April the Armenian wrestlers will take part in 2017 Armenia Junior Wrestling Championship on the basis of the results of which the team of the RA young wrestlers will be formed. The latter will begin to get ready for 2017 European Junior Wrestling Championship to be held in Dortmund, Germany, from 27 June to 2 July
