Fyodor Lukyanov: No external player interested in Karabakh conflict escalation
Russia will not involve in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict through military means as long as the confrontation remains of local nature, however, it will interfere through other means, Chairman of the Presidium of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, and Research Director of the Valdai International Discussion Club Fyodor Lukyanov told a press conference on Monday, when asked to assess the possibility of Russian involvement in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict should Azerbaijan start a war.
In Lukyanov words, currently no external player is interested in the escalation of the conflict with each of them engaged with other issues.
“I see no external factors to prompt the conflict escalation except the certain internal logic of the sides,” the political scientist suggested, adding internal instability raises whenever there is an interest from external forces.
“There is no such an interest today,” said Lukyanov.
He next suggested that possible tensions will come in the form of the April incidents [April four-day war] with Russia exerting effort to cease the military actions along with other co-chairing states [of the OSCE Minsk Group].
“That will not be a solution of the conflict, and I see no possibility for the settlement at this stage,” stressed Lukyanov, saying the preservation of the status quo appears to be the only feasible thing to stay with.
