Armenian Genocide memorial to be installed in Cologne, Germany
A memorial dedicated to the Armenian Genocide will be installed in Cologne city of Germany, Ermenihaber reports, referring to Milliyet Turkish news agency.
The source underlines the fact that the decision on installing an Armenian Genocide memorial has been adopted right now amid the tension in Turkish-German relations.
Upon the decision of the General Committee of Cologne City Council, the memorial will be erected in Lehmbacher Weg cemetery. To note, graves of Muslims are also seen in the cemetery.
The proposal of the project on installing an Armenian Genocide memorial was made still in 2015 by the Armenian Christian community in Cologne with a total of 5000 members.
The Turkish community of the city opposed the decision. One of the leading representative of the local Armenian community Levent Tashkeryan noted that the Turkish community fought for two years for the rejection of the decision on installing the memorial. However, it is noted that the decision on the Armenian Genocide memorial is final and does not require approval by another institution.
The source reminds that Germany and the Netherlands have banned a group of Turkish officials from holding rallies in the counties ahead of the Turkish Constitutional referendum set on April 16. The Constitutional Court of Germany has also banned any similar action of the Turkish politicians in Germany.
Moreover, the Netherlands supported Germany. The Dutch Government imposed the same ban on Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and Family Affairs Minister Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya escorting the latter from the country.
