TB morbidity and mortality rates decreased in Armenia, experts say
“We have registered quite a good situation in Armenia in terms of the control over tuberculosis (TB) regarding both the detection of new cases and the tendency in the reduction of its mortality rate,” Director of the National Center for Tuberculosis (TB) Control, Armen Hayrapetyan noted during today’s press conference, Panorama.am reports referring to Armenia’s Ministry of Health.
The World Health Organization (WHO) considers 58 percent recovery of TB cases as a guaranteed statistics of anti-tuberculosis fight. Armenia is close to this result. Currently 79.3 percent complete recovery of TB cases is registered in our country.
As Armen Hayrapetyan noted, in 2016 820 new cases of the disease were registered in Armenia to compare with 1507 cases in 2007. In 2016 48 people died from the TB. It is to be noted that 175 cases of death from this disease were registered in 2007.
The specialists continue to be concerned about the fact that tuberculosis is at times combined with HIV infection, which multiples its treatment difficulties.
Program Coordinator for the Communicable Diseases of the WHO Office in Armenia Gayane Ghukasyan reminded that this year as well the WHO is led by the slogan “Let's work together to eliminate TB”, meantime paying special attention to the elimination of the stigma and discrimination against the people suffering from this disease.
Gayane Ghukasyan noted that in 2016 323000 new cases of the TB were registered in the European region with 32,000 fatal cases. Meantime positive trends are observed in controlling and overcoming the disease.
