International media reports on Armenia’s parliamentary elections
A number of well-known international media outlets have referred to the Parliamentary elections underway in Armenia.
Famous U.S. news agency The Washington Post covered the topic noting that Armenians voted Sunday in the country’s first parliamentary election since the nation modified its constitution to expand the powers of parliament and the prime minister.
“Polls prior to the vote showed the Republican Party of Armenia’s president, Serzh Sargsyan, in the lead, closely followed by a bloc led by businessman Gagik Tsarukian, one of Armenia’s richest men,” reads the report.
Al-Jazeera repots that Sunday's election is expected to be a close race between the majority-wielding Republican Party of Armenia, backed by President Serzh Sarkisian, and an alliance of businessman and former world champion arm wrestler Gagik Tsarukyan's Prosperous Armenia party.
“The poll election is a key democratic test for the small landlocked nation of 2.9 million, which has no history of transfers of power to an opposition through the ballot box,” the article reads.
Turning to the Armenian elections, German news agency Deutsche Welle reports that the citizens of the republic are set to decide the battle between the ruling party, headed by President Serzh Sargsyan, and the coalition behind businessman and former world champion arm wrestler Gagik Tsarukian.
Russia Today has made in detail reference to the observation missions, parties and number of the voters involved in Armenia’s Parliamentary elections adding that after the referendum in December 2015, Serzh Sargsyan, will become the last president elected in a national vote.
