OSCE/ ODIHR observer: Preliminary assessments feature both positive and negative elements
“The Election day was calm and peaceful. In general, the electoral processes have been ensured, voter authentication devices have worked properly,” Ambassador Jan Petersen, Head of the election observation mission from the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights said during the meeting with the reporters briefing on the preliminary assessments of the observation mission over the Parliamentary elections held in Armenia on April 2.
In his words, their preliminary statement features both positive and negative elements.
“It is necessary to touch upon the issues of the secrecy of the vote and vote-buying,” he said.
Jan Petersen added that the observers noted queues and gatherings with party representatives and police officers making interventions in some polling stations.
Meantime, he reminded that the Parliamentary elections in Armenia have been held pursuant to the new Electoral Code and it takes time for everyone to become aware of that new system.
In the words of Jan Petersen, their mission will remain in Armenia through this week and the next in order to follow post-election developments, including the finalization of results and the handling of any possible complaints and appeals.
