Official demands, receives $21.500 in bribes – Armenia’s SIS reports
Armenia’s Special Investigative Service (SIS) has launched a criminal case into the incidents of receiving significant amount of bribe totaling to $21500 by an official conducting a special state service and giving the mentioned amount to the official upon the report received by Alen M, an inmate at “Hrazdan” penitentiary of Armenia’s Ministry of Justice.
As the Press Service of the SIS told Panorama.am, on 23.03.2017, the inmate reported that an officer of the operative department of the mentioned penitentiary demanded and received significant amount in bribes from his relatives in exchange for involving him in the economic activities of the institution, promoting him as a conscientious worker and granting parole on the mentioned grounds. According to Alen M., the employee of the penitentiary has in particular demanded $50.000 bribes from him; however, during September 2015 the official received almost half of the demanded sum ($ 21.500) from the inmate’s mother, brother and wife.
However, after receiving the money, the official did not keep his promise for a long time, for that reason two years later, in 2017, the inmate submitted a report on the circumstances of the crime.
Thus, the Special Investigative Service has initiated a criminal case into the incidents of receiving $21,500 significant amount of bribe by an official conducting a special state service in the “Hrazdan” penitentiary and giving significant sum in bribes to the official under the requirements of Part 2 (Point 2) of Article 311 and Part 3 (Point 1) of Article 312 of the RA Criminal Code.
Preliminary probe is underway.
Notice: The person suspected in or accused of an alleged crime shall be presumed innocent unless proven guilty in the manner prescribed by the RA Criminal Procedure Code in accordance with the Court’s verdict made effective.
