Gagik Tsarukyan’s decision not to participate in Yerevan municipal elections is a gift to “Yelq” bloc, political technologist says
Political technologist Vigen Hakobyan does not rule out that democratic posture of PM Karen Karapetyan prompted many western oriented citizens to vote for the ruling party during the past parliamentary elections in Armenia. Hakobyan gave a press conference on Monday, speaking of the parliamentary election results as well as the upcoming elections to the Yerevan’s Council of Elders.
The political technologist expressed surprise over the decision of “Tsarukyan” bloc not to participate in the municipal elections, considering the political force received 27.38% of the votes during the parliamentary elections to become the second biggest fraction in Armenia’s new National Assembly after the ruling Republican party.
“Gagik Tsarukyan would not return to politics if there hadn’t been the known 2018 incidents. Now he secured himself from uncomfortable situation through a decision not to run in Yerevan municipal elections. On the other hand, the decision not to participate in Yerevan elections is a gift to “Yelq” bloc, that should mobilize the citizens to obtain all the votes that will not go to the ruling party,” explained Hakobyan.
The political technologist suggested the third political force that had announced a plan to participate in the municipal elections – “Yerkir Tsirani” (Land of Apricot) headed by Zaruhi Postanjyan - mostly marks its debut on the political arena, a unique presentation of the new political force.
“Should Zaruhi Postanjyan manage to come up with radical solutions during the election campaign, she will attract the votes of “Tsarukyan bloc”, mostly the vote of confidence from socially disadvantaged groups,” Hakobyan concluded.
To remind, Armenia’s Central Electoral Commission earlier reported that three political forces have registered their lists for the elections to Yerevan’s Council of Elders slated for May 14 as he deadline for nomination of the candidate lists ended on Sunday.
